Summer Program for Kids

Through the summer program which is supported by the Ohio Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, LoveLight has provided over 45,000 nutritious lunches for children living in lower-income neighborhoods.  During the summer of 2012, a total of 2,891 first lunches and 329 seconds were served at six sites:

In Kent, Ohio

  • Silver Meadows Apts.
  • Athena Drive Apartments
  • Summit Gardens
  • Heritage Knolls

In Brimfield, Ohio

  • Brimfield Town Square Villas

In Ravenna, Ohio

  • Ravenna Woods/Church of Christ

For the Kent, Brimfield, and Ravenna sites, lunches were prepared at St. Patrick Church kitchen in Kent. Staff worked to maximize the nutritional value of the meals by using fresh fruits and vegetables, 100% fruit juice slushies, and whole grain products whenever possible.

In addition to the meals, activities were provided for the children. Such experiences included team games (kickball, football, and volleyball); water and bubble play; creative crafts- decorating t-shirts, making jewelry and masks; relay races; soccer; team-building exercises; painting and drawing; tag; nature walk and science projects; stories; planting seeds; and board games. Over the course of the summer, 214 children participated in the program.
